Introduction and executive summaryPart 1;

The market

1.1 Overview and analysis of the Nigerian satellite television market

Nigeria is a new area for development of television services, and is reasonably typical of the income potential subscriber base, coupled with a limited available investment resource.There is also a limited incountry technical infrastructure.Although this is growing as educational programmes and investment begin to have an effect in the longer term, there is a short term shortage of indigenous technical skills.This limits the options for the originaTrend claim that their seven channel MMDS system has 30,000 subscribers, and predict that 40% of their MMDS subscribers will convert to the DTH platform in 2004 -5.

Trend TV began test transmissions in late 2003 on Intelsat 907 with two or three channels; the main launch was in October 2004.

Trend has a technical limit of 32 channels on its two transponders and is currently transmitting 30 channels.

The channel line up is inferior to Dstv and FSTV, as the offering includes a less attractive content mix of sport and movies.The main technical facilities are in London and Norway.

Trend TV are located on Intelsat 907, which is a last-generation satellite, but with a reasonable irradiated power profile.The footprint is somewhat limited, but is sufficient for the Nigerian domestic market and the immediate surrounding area.

Trend use the Conax conditional access system which is based in Norway and has a card - set-top-box verifier feature which prevents their set-top-box from being used by any other Conax operator.Part 2;

Financial considerations

2.1 Assumptions

For each of the three options we have considered the Nigerian market only.

The numbers would improve if the surrounding countries were included.

Option 1 assumes that the STB is sold at cost to the subscriber and that there is one bouquet.

Option 2 assumes that the platform is split into two bouquets.

The premier bouquet

is priced as in Option 1 and includes the Sports and Movie channels while the basic bouquet is priced as low as possible and excludes the originated Sports and Movie channel.

This will increase the number of subscribers at no cost to the platform.

Option 3 assumes that the STB is sold to thesubscriber at cost, but the subscriber gets five months free viewing to offset the purchase and installation price.This will increase the number of subscribers due to the lower cost of entry but at no risk to the platform.

The number of new subscribers per month is increased in option 2 and 3 due to the reduced monthly subscribers cost of entry.

This increase we have estimated to be 50%

For these calculations we have used a sterling exchange rate of N242, and a USD exchange providers to absorb a proportion of the start-up risk.Instead of taking a traditional model where the costs per subscriber payable to the CA vendor are linear, a more creative model has been adopted for new startunknown at this time.

Similar benefits do not accrue, however, as is seen in CA system pricing and charging.The space segment evaluation shows that for a relatively small saving in year 1 of around 1.2 M USD, it would cost The clientpossible fluctuations in exchange rate.

Other new operators and quality of service

Nigeria is seen as a promising new area for development, and several projects are under way to launch new DTH and MMDS services.

The opportunity to capture a significant percentage of the market

before saturation occurs will depend on two significant factors - a good quality service, and a prompt entry into the market.

The quality issue is simply addressed by ensuring that the technical basis of the service is sound and well-designed, so preventing poor delivery quality, CA dropout problems and reduced uptime.

Diminished uptime through weather conditions (caused by insufficient investment in satellite delivery power) or transmission technical dropouts (caused by technical problems in the transmission facility) will dramatically undermine the perception of the channel, and so rapidly increase churn rate.This will have a significant negative impact on cashflow.

The content issue is also critical.The channel needs to offer a perceptibly different package with a distinct identity to the existing operators and also guard against new entrants copying the The client(M) (M TV he client not included in Option 2) Extreme sports Boxing channel Men and Motors

Movies

The client's Movies (Produced by The client not included in Option 2) Sony AXAThe video and audio components of a television channel take a large digital bandwidth to maximise the efficient use of the satellite bandwidth.The video is encoded and compressed in real time to MPEG-2 format, and multiplexed with the other (now also compressed) channels to form a multichannel Transport Stream suitable for efficient satellite transmission.

Conditional Access

In order to capture revenue from the subscribers, a method of encrypting the signal to prevent non-paying viewers from accessing the service is required.

This is the conditional access system, and is based on electronic access cards being issued to valid customers.The choice of conditional access effects many areas of the system such as the set-top-box.

The choice of conditional access provider is critical for 3 reasons;

security (has the system been hacked, and how secure is it against future piracy? Does the CA system provider have an active anti-hacking development strategy?hannels unless he has an active client's smart card.If the customer stops subscribing,

then the client and the FTA channels are blocked, and the settop box effectively becomes dead.In addition to the security implications, this procedure also
