Conversion factors are ways of relating quantities or values of two differing units.

Some examples of values that could be used as conversion factors would be: 2.54 centimeters = 1.00 inch 0.621 miles = 1.00 kilometer 1.00 quart = 0.946 liters 454 grams = 1.00 pound You can find more of these in your textbook.

What is important is to learn how to use them to get from the value and unit you have been given to the value and unit that is desired.

All of the above equalities can be rewritten as ratios.

For example: 2.54 centimeters = 1.00 inch If we divide both sides of the equation by 1.00 inch

We now have a conversion factor relating centimeters and inches.

Note that we could just have easily divided The conversion factor is useful to change from one unit to another because anything you multiply by the same value, even if it looks different.

easily what goes where.

The following is an example of the multiplication using fractions followed by the same

of this calculation.

It keeps the numerators (tops) and denominators (bottoms) more in line with each other to lessen confusion about what is multiplied and what is divided.

The trick is to put what you were given, or what you haveonly unit left is the desired unit, or what you wantlearn the process you will find that conversions are not as bad as they can sometimes seem.

Example 1:

(units of mass)

First we look for what we have been given, or what we have.

Then we determine what we want.

We can see that we have been given a value in grams but we want to know how many ounces that is.

In some cases we will be able to use one conversion factor to get from what we have to what we want, but in our example we will have to use more than one step.

(Note: Some texts may have a direct conversion factor from grams to ounces but we will assume that yours does not and that you will have to go from grams to pounds have in the top left box.

Then, without using any numbers, fill in the units in the other boxes until everything has cancelled except the unit of what we want.Everett Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, marital status, disability, or veteran status.

Once our units have cancelled properly then we can go back and fill in the numbers where they belong.

It is a good idea to get used to writing down what you are referring to now because as the course goes on, there will what!

It takes up more time and space but, in the long run, you will be much better off to have made doing it a habit by the time you really need it.

When doing these calculations on your calculator there are two ways to do them.

The first is to multiply all the numbers on the top together and then, using the parentheses on your calculator, divide by the product of all the numbers on the bottom.

In our example this would be: 2.0 x 1 x 16 / (454 x 1) =

Another method is to multiply everything on the top together and then divide, one at a time, by everything on the bottom.

2.0 x 1 x 16 / 454 / 1 = dividing by 1 does not change anything so they can be omitted).

Both of these methods will give you the same answer and you should do whichever makes you feel more secure.

Example 2:

(units of volume) Some of our units of volume are a single unit, such as liter (L), or quart.

Others are a dimension that has been 3) or cubic centimeters (cm3).

Converting from or

Again, we will assume that your text does not include a direct conversion factor from feet to meters.

We will be going from feet to inches, from inches to centimeters, and from centimeters to meters.

Since all of these dimensions are cubed, there will be three of each conversion factor to get from what we have to what we want.

have in the top left box.

Then, without using any numbers, fill in the units in the other boxes until everything has cancelled except the unit of what we want.

Now we can go back and fill in the numbers since our units cancelled until we were left with m3.

72.5 x 12 x 12 x 12 x 2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54 / (102 x 102 x 102) = or 72.5 x 12 x 12 x 12 x 2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54 / 102 / 102 / 102 =

(multiple units, in this case density) Many of the numbers we will be working with will have more than one unit attached, such as miles per hour (mi/hr), kilometers per second (km/sec), or grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3).

It is very important to put

This time we have two units that must be converted.

The number value always goes with the first unit, which is on top in this case, but we must be sure to include the other unit as well, which is in the denominator.

Also, as in our last example, we have a cubed value and must have three conversion factors to account for it.

We have in the proper boxes, then fill in the units in the other boxes until everything has cancelled to what we want.

We have cancelled our in3 on the bottom and are left with cm3, and also we have cancelled lb and are left with g.

Since our desired units were g/cm3, we can now fill in the numbers.

0.51 x 454 / (2.54 x 2.54 x 2.54) = or

0.51 x 454 / 2.54 / 2.54 / 2.54 = You will learn many other conversion factors as you progress through your chemistry course but this approach can be used for nearly all of them.

You will be required to get comfortable with scientific notation and the concept of significant figures, which are covered in your textbook.
